Kathy Christiansen

Family:

Husband is Jon. Daughters are Heidi, Ruth & Julie. Heidi is married to Henry Knight of Chicago.

Ministry Focus:

Primary school children in the correspondence are eager to learn to read both English and Shona. Their delightful insights and questions about the Bible and the Lord are refreshing. Teaching the staff children is fun.

Listening to the ladies in the weekly Ruwadzano with an interpreter gives me insight into their prayer life as well as the interesting cultural struggles that raise yet again the question: how much of culture is Christ culture and how much is not. Working with AWANA children on Sunday mornings is rewarding as children take Bible memory seriously. The kids are excellent Bible story listeners and even better at dramatizing them. Balancing the life of wife, distance mom and grandma, as well as FT teacher is an interesting life in the bush of Zimbabwe 3hrs away from the capital city.

The People:

Shona people are in transition as they jump into the digital satellite world in the midst of their farming village life and roots steeped in the soil of animism and ancestor worship. Though Christianity has been in country for a Century, people are still mixing tribal customs, witchcraft, unbiblical prophets and basic mistrust of one another with basic Christian doctrine. Unfortunately, assurance of salvation is not as well understood in yet another generation. Adultery is rampant, AIDS orphans flood the country, and the same sins that befall our western churches plague the people here. Yet, the bright light of the recent salvation decision of the local witch doctor and the subsequent church celebration of her burning the fetishes and the lovely songs of joy and triumph of Christ in the community has been monumental. He is working! The children also give me encouragement by their honest questions and hope in Christ with their daily prayer requests at the correspondence school.
