TEAM Eats: Salmorejo

Salmorejo
Tomato soup isn’t just for cold fall days anymore! Cool off this summer with a cool and refreshing bowl of salmorejo, from Spain.

After a short-term mission trip to Spain, Lauren Witteveen decided she had to come back and continue the work. And with a tiny evangelical population in Spain, TEAM missionaries like Lauren have their work cut out for them! Lauren spends much of her time building relationships and studying Spanish, and the linguistic and cultural disconnects can be exhausting. So, on those long, hot Spanish days, Lauren likes to cool off with a nice bowl of salmorejo. This tomato soup dish has been a favorite since Lauren’s first visit to Spain. But even more than their food, Lauren loves the Spanish…

TEAM Eats: Enchiladas Verdes

Enchiladas Verdes
Enchiladas verdes are delightfully simple — and delicious. You'll love this missionary favorite from Mexico.

A church planter’s work is never done — but enchiladas verdes are the perfect end to a long day of ministry. Today we’re trying out this traditional Mexican favorite, with a recipe sent in by that TEAM missionaries Vicki and Art Reyes!  Art was born and raised in Mexico until he was 10 years old. His family moved to the U.S. so Art and his siblings could live out the American dream. But as an adult, Art, along with his wife Vicki, felt God’s leading to serve Him in Mexico. Now, the couple serves a Mexican congregation and encourages other Hispanic…

TEAM Eats: Flammkuchen

Looking down at flammkuchen, which looks similar to a square pizza with cheese and bacon
This German, pizza-style dish is delicious and so simple anyone can make it! Keep reading to see how we made it!

Flammkuchen is a specialty of the region of Germany where we live and serve as TEAM missionaries.  Back in the day, German farmers would bake bread once a week. To test the oven temperature before they baked bread, they would put this small assortment of bread, creme fraiche and cheese into the oven. And that creation eventually evolved into what we know today as flammkuchen, or “pie baked in flames.”  Nowadays it’s the German version of pizza. It’s easy to eat on the go, or you can get it at a nice restaurant. It’s very simple to make, which is…

TEAM Eats: Creamy Chicken Curry from Pakistan

Creamy Chicken Curry
This Pakistani curry is creamy, nutty and all kinds of delicious. Check out the recipe for a taste of culture your family will love.

Today’s recipe comes all the way from missionaries in Pakistan. This delightfully saucy chicken curry is packed with deep flavors and spices that all meld together to create a warm, nutty taste. And unlike many Pakistani dishes, this one isn’t super spicy, making it a great introduction to the country’s cuisine. If you enjoy flavorful food that does not singe your tastebuds, you’ll love this chicken curry! As you cook, take some time to pray for fellow believers in Pakistan. In this part of the world, Christians experience extreme persecution. Churches are often vandalized and Christians can be beaten and…

TEAM Eats: Espinacas Con Garbanzos

This month we made tapas from Spain! This lovely spinach and bean dish is perfect for chilly winter days!

This month, our TEAM Eats dish comes all the way from Spain! TEAM missionaries Sharon and Carey Owens love the Spanish tradition of going out for tapas. Tapas are delicious food served on small plates, like an appetizer. One of the Owens’ favorites is espinacas con garbanzos, a chickpea and spinach dish.  Sharon says this is the perfect hot dish for a cold winter day. It’s great alone or with crackers or a baguette!  “We love it in the winter months when it’s chilly. Sort of like a different type of chili. Delicious! Warms you up from the inside out,”…

TEAM Eats: Kolachkes

Finished cookies surrounded by Christmas decor
Check out this recipe for traditional Czech cookies! Then, take some time to pray for the Czech people.

Today’s recipe was originally published by The Hungry Bluebird.  Merry Christmas! These cookies come all the way from the Czech Republic and they are delicious! These light and sweet cookies are easy to make and will add some cultural diversity to your upcoming Christmas parties and family dinners.  Even though there isn’t sugar in the cookie dough itself, the cookies get just the right amount of sweetness from the jam or cream cheese filling in the middle. In that way, these buttery, flaky cookies are similar to  American pastries Try them out for yourself because they are super yummy and…

TEAM Eats: Aşure (Noah’s Ark Pudding)

Aşure (or Noah's ark pudding) is a Middle Eastern dessert with a bit of everything in it! Check out the recipe our missionaries shared with us.

This month our recipe is the Turkish dish Aşure (Noah’s ark pudding)! Our version is based off Elizabeth Taviloglu’s recipe at the Spruce Eats. Our missionaries in Turkey love gathering with their friends and neighbors for potlucks. “Having everyone bring something different makes it fun to learn about other people and try new foods,” one missionary says. “Also, miraculously, we always have the right types of food that we need!” Turkish neighbors often bring this dish over in their own bowls. When the missionaries finish eating it, they often make a new dish in the same bowl and return it…

While you’re enjoying this dish, take some time to pray for the country of Austria. TEAM Eats: Picado de Rábano

The finished picado de rábano
Try out this recipe for a delicious side dish all the way from Guatemala called picado de rábano!

This month’s recipe comes from TEAM missionaries David and Diana Stoddard, who serve at Central American Theological Seminary in Guatemala. They both rave about picado de rábano. This radish salad is crisp and fresh and goes with almost any main dish. It’s a delightful good-for-you dish. Try it out and let us know what you think in the comments! Also, while you are enjoying this dish, take time to pray for missionaries serving in Guatemala. Although the country is far from being considered unreached, protestant Christians are still in the minority. A lot of people in this area are saturated…

TEAM Eats: Irish Soda Bread

Irish soda bread doesn't look like your standard loaf of bread. It is lumpy and hearty.
Check out this recipe for a hearty bread all the way from our missionaries in Ireland! This isn't the normal bread you would expect. Keep reading to check it out!

I love Irish food. It’s hearty and wonderful, especially on a cold wet day. In Ireland, traditional food consists of meat (beef, ham, chicken or lamb), root vegetables (potatoes, carrots, parsnips, turnips, onions) cabbage, oats and bread — lots of bread! Almost every food order in Ireland comes with “brown bread” also known as “soda bread.”  It’s heartier and not fluffy like white bread. It’s nutty and full and tummy-filling! An older woman gave me this recipe after I complimented her on the bread she made for a ladies’ brunch. She said, “It’s just a regular brown bread,” but I…
