Medical Ministry
Vision:
The medical ministry currently partners with Christian Guatemalan doctors who have already established medical ministries but are in need of additional help and resources. We focus on the poor and underserved populations of Guatemala. Specifically in Zone 3 of Guatemala City, Palin, and rural areas where there is limited access to medical care.
Our goal in any medical ministry we do in Guatemala is to provide quality, holistic medical care, alongside Guatemalan providers, as a means to lead people to Christ and show God’s love in the midst of opportunities.
The Ministry:
Our current medical missionary, Amie Bockstahler, has become involved with these various areas of medical ministry. She would love other medical missionaries to join her in Guatemala and help to increase the number of hearts and lives we can touch through medicine!
Corazon de Amor Clinic
– Guatemala City, Guatemala
This clinic serves a community of over 10,000 people who survive by scavenging through the city garbage dump. The director and full-time doctor at the clinic, Dr. Layla, is Guatemalan and has a huge heart of compassion and love for the people of this community and joyfully strives to help their physical needs, as well as their material and spiritual needs whenever possible. Dr. Layla’s husband is the pastor of a church near this community and together they selflessly serve the community in many ways beyond the church and the clinic, including AWANA programs, Compassion programs, feeding programs, a school that provides quality education, church plants, a ministry to street kids addicted to drugs, ministries in two other high-risk areas of the city, and so much more. More information on this clinic can be found here.
Salud Que Transforma Clinic
– Palin, Guatemala
This clinic focuses on providing affordable and accessible healthcare in rural areas of Guatemala. They have a clinic open 24 hours, 7 days a week staffed by 2 medical doctors, 4 nurses, 1 dentist, 1 nutritionist, and 1 physical therapist. Twice a week they pack up medicines and supplies and take part with the staff out to areas 1-2 hours away in even more rural areas of the country where people living in those areas rarely are able to get healthcare. Once a month they also drive up to 8 hours away to the area of Quiche where there are primarily Mayan Indiana villages and serve the people of those villages that may never leave their villages or have access to healthcare. The director and full-time doctor of the clinic, Dr. Erick, has a heart for both patients living in rural areas, as well as seeing children be healthy and able to flourish in their education. As a result, the clinic in Palin serves the children of the community by providing free health care and dental care as well as providing an after school program twice a week which feeds them a healthy lunch, teaches them about the Bible, and helps them with their homework.
Nursing School
-Palin, Guatemala
One of the other ministries of Salud Que Transforma is a nursing assistant school. Here in Guatemala, there are very few professional nurses working in hospitals and clinics. The majority of nursing positions within the Guatemalan medical system are staffed by nursing assistants, who receive a year of training. The students we teach receive classes on Saturdays for a year and then graduate and are able to seek out jobs in private clinics and hospitals. Our desire as a nursing school is to provide quality nursing education with a Biblical based nursing school.
