It can be argued that Czech Republic is one of the most atheistic and secular countries in the world, with roughly 89% of the country claiming to be atheists and the “church” being less than one-third of one percent of the country. We see a huge need for a relevant, real, humble Christian presence in the great city of Prague. When Prague was the capital of the Holy Roman Empire, it won the name “Matka M?st,” or “Mother of Cities.” It was unrivaled in its day. Sadly, through world and European events, Prague’s influence faded. But we believe that God still loves this city and the people in it! We believe that culture starts in the major cities of the world and flows out from them; therefore, if you reach the cities, you reach the surrounding areas.
TaCesta (“The Journey” or “The Way”) Church is committed to Prague’s city center and the city itself. Our desire is to reach the young urban professionals, the culture makers, and the “least of these.” We have been dubbed, “The Cafe Church,” as we meet weekly in a well-known Prague cafe. We believe that what Jesus said to Paul in Corinth – “I have many people in this city.” (Acts 18:9) – is true of Prague. Our hope is to be a community of people that loves Jesus recklessly and also loves the city deeply. Through our weekly gatherings, missional communities, works of mercy through the city, and more, we will see Prague redeemed!
In 2009, a small group of friends began to gather and study the Bible. Many of them had been Czech Christians that were what can be described as “de-churched” (“Those without a past relationship to the church are called unchurched, but there are many with significant past church involvement who are exiting. They are the de-churched.” -Christian author and Pastor Skye Jethani) and rather disenfranchised by the larger Czech church. What started as a small group three years ago is now a weekly gathering of about 70 who meet in in a cafe in the city center of Prague. The core group of leaders are made up of Czech believers and a few Czech-speaking internationals.
Please pray for our efforts as we seek to love this great city and also pray for spiritual protection as we seek God in the midst of all of this. If you love cities, specifically the great city of Prague, love urban ministry, and love doing ministry outside the box, please pray about joining us!
