My Story

I was born in the Kansas City area and raised in Houston. I earned a BA in history at Rice University, and then the US Navy trained me to operate nuclear reactors as a submarine officer.

I felt God drawing my heart to world missions ever since I heard Robertson McQuilkin speak at a 1991 Campus Crusade Christmas Conference. I didn’t realize that he himself was a TEAM missionary to Japan until after I had served for 8 years in the Navy, volunteered in a church in Japan, and finished a Th.M. at Dallas Theological Seminary. Life came full circle.

Jenny and I met in Japan when she was a missionary. We now have two kids: Hudson and Annalise.

Ministry Focus:

I have been working with Pastor Takeshi Koiwai in the Central Nagano Ministry Initiative. Ministry ranges from preaching in Japanese at Azumino Family Chapel and Abundant Life Church to outreach to the community: chaplain ministries to a local boys’ reformatory, Bible studies at a local home for physically challenged, and leadership seminars for fellow pastors in ministries and local community leaders.

We are currently on home assignment in America, but we plan to return to Japan in a few months with a new ministry. Plans are in the works, so stay posted for updates here.

The People:

The Japanese are the second largest unreached people group in the world according Joshua Project statistics. Less than 0.5% of Japanese are active members in churches and very few of them can wield any influence for Christ in their social networks.

Although there is freedom of religion and the Bible is occasionally available in bookstores, the average Japanese person will not come to faith in Christ without further help. Unfortunately, the number of missionaries in Japan is declining before their work is finished.

Primary Prayer Request:

Pray for us as we discern the Lord’s leading in plans for new ministry in Japan. Some exciting opportunities lay before us. Pray for us to be wise in decisions and effective in communicating in our planning work with others.

Pray for our upcoming house hunting when we return to Japan.
