Ben and Beth Barthelemy

Our Story

From a young age, Ben realized his own sinfulness and need for a Savior. Through the testimony of his parents, he trusted in Christ. His family has been involved in both pastoral and overseas ministry, giving Ben a firsthand glimpse of faithful service to the Lord. Early in high school, Ben realized that God had given him a desire to serve in cross-cultural ministry. In order to further prepare for serving the Lord in full-time ministry, Ben attended Moody Bible Institute, where he met Beth.

Beth was raised by loving and godly parents who taught her from an early age about the love of Jesus. It wasn’t until high school that she truly understood the significance of the gospel and became passionate about following Jesus. After a short-term mission trip to Peru, the Lord gave Beth a passion for overseas ministry. Beth graduated from Moody Bible Institute with a BA in Biblical Studies and an emphasis in women’s ministry.

Ben & Beth were married in 2009, spent a year living and working in Taiwan, and attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School for 5 years. Beth graduated with an MA in Christian Studies in May 2014, and Ben graduated with an MDiv in 2016. In September 2016, we relocated our family to Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, where we live and work at Union Bible Institute. We have four lively daughters: Norah (8), Stella (6), Tess (5), and Ady (3).

Ministry Focus:

We both have a passion for teaching God’s Word and seeing people come to a better understanding of themselves, God, and what he requires of those committed to him. We are on staff at Union Bible Institute in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. UBI serves the South African church by providing theological education for students who desire to serve God in ministry. We are grateful to be involved in God’s good work of discipling and raising up another generation of Christian leaders. Ben primarily teaches Hebrew and Old Testament classes. Beth’s ministry is focused on writing, discipling women, and home life. We are also involved in a multicultural church plant in our city.

Primary Prayer Request:

Pray that we serve God faithfully in our context: for wisdom in discipling, for a love for our students, for boldness in sharing the gospel. Pray for our family life, that our marriage would be strong and we would have wisdom in parenting our children.
