I grew up in Brazil as a missionary kid–my parents were with and still are with TEAM. I have a passion for people—especially those who don’t know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior. I try to seek opportunities to develop relationships with unbelievers and share the gospel with them as the Holy Spirit leads. I also enjoy mentoring young believers and helping them grow in their walk with the Lord.
I came to Christ when I was five years old in Douglas, Wyoming. My mother shared with me about how Jesus forgives my every wrong. All I had to do was ask Him to come into my heart—so I did. Since that time, I have grown in my understanding of salvation and the need to allow Christ to not only be my Savior, but my Lord. My father baptized me on April 9th, 1996 in Brazil.
During college I had thought about serving in community development through the Peace Corps, but was challenged in this regard by my father. He asked me: “Why don’t you think about doing work overseas in Christ’s name instead of the government?” That question brought me to rededicate my life to the Lord to serve Him through missionary work overseas. Through various post-college short-term trips to Brazil and other countries, as well as many hours spent in prayer, and guidance by mentors, God clearly led our family to Brazil. We recognized the gifts and talents God has given us as well as the need to train up more leaders in Brazil, challenging them to commit their lives to serving the Brazilian church and fulfilling the Great Commission. We spent three years investing in the ministry in Brazil until TEAM asked me to return to the US to help develop the Creation Care Initiative.
In my personal walk with the Lord, two events in particular have been spiritually formative for me. College was a time of learning to make Jesus my Lord, not just my Savior—allowing Him to be in control of my life instead of me trying to live as a Christian by my own strength. The other event was on April 21st, 2007. Our first son, Noah, died of a seizure at 15 ½ months of age. I have grown closer to the Lord through the grief and pain, and I am continually learning of God’s desire for me as His child: that I love Him and trust Him more every day. Even in grief, God has renewed in me a passion for the lost—nothing else matters in this life if we don’t have Christ.
I grew up in Olean, NY and am the eldest of three. I accepted Jesus into my heart when I was eight years old at a Christian summer camp. In high school, I spent two summers in Jamaica helping with various orphanages and church building projects. God broke my heart for the innocent children of the world and gave me a strong call for missions and hurting people.
I went to Houghton College and studied Biology with the desire to one day serve as a medical missionary. During my last year I had the opportunity to spend a semester in Tanzania, East Africa. While there, I became sick with subcutaneous anthrax. Through the testimony of my African nurses, the Lord showed me that He wanted me to be a nurse and minister to people’s basic needs. The Lord also brought me my best friend and now husband, Ben. After Houghton, I did a one year nursing program to get my RN degree before getting married August 30th, 2003.
Ben and I have been married for over nine years now and he has been by my side through many adventures and trials. We have lived in many places including Washington DC, Fort Myers Florida, Columbia SC and Brazil. It has been exciting to see God direct our path and walk with us each step of the way.
One of the trials that has most impacted both our lives was the death of our first son, Noah, at the age of 15 1/2 months on April, 21st 2007. The Lord has been our greatest comfort and source of strength as we grieve the loss of Noah. I know that I will hold my little boy again and that through the testimony of his young life we can comfort and help others.
God has also blessed us with three more boys, Caleb, Samuel and David. They are a joy and a constant reminder of God’s faithfulness. As I daily deal with the mixed emotions of grief and joy , I am reminded of the reality of heaven. I desire for the world to know the truth of Jesus Christ and to give their hearts to Him. I am excited for the opportunity to serve in Brazil and be encouraging Brazilians to reach out to a hurting world in need of Christ.
In my free time I love to exercise, do arts and crafts, cook, play games, visit with my neighbors, read, and take care of my family of boys. I am excited for what the Lord has for us here in Brazil and look forward to serving Him.
