I grew up in a military family and lived in a variety of locations in the USA and overseas before graduating from high school in Florida. It was while living in the Philippines that I first heard and understood the Gospel, giving my life to Christ as a young teenager. Joni (my wife) and I met as college students in Tennessee and were married as we were finishing our college years. After seminary studies, I had the opportunity to serve as a youth pastor in Roanoke, Virginia for several years, during which time all three of our children were born.
In 1987, after several years of learning about God’s global plans for the church, our family left for missionary service in Spain with Bible Christian Union where we experienced firsthand the joys and challenges of cross-cultural life and ministry. Those years were formative in our life as a family, preparing us for what God had in mind for each of us in years to come. During that season of life, a growing appreciation was developing in me for the people and the potential of the global church. That has persisted to the present, with God giving me increasing opportunities to develop friendships with global church leaders in various parts of the world.
Upon our return to the USA, I served for ten years as Missions and Executive Pastor at Calvary Church in Lancaster, PA. In 2004 God made it clear He was calling me to the pastoral staff of Emmanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido, CA where I served as the Outreach Ministries Pastor, overseeing local and global outreach ministries of the church. Those years of ministry in local churches have shaped much of how I see the advance of Christ’s Kingdom, locally and globally. One of my biggest sources of joy is to serve individuals and churches that want to take steps toward those who are unreached and on the margins of the Kingdom. During those years of pastoral ministry, I was privileged to have two tenures of service on TEAM’s Board of Directors (1995-2005 and 2017-2019).
Cycling (road), hiking and camping are favorite pastimes for Joni and me… as is spending time with kids and grandkids. I also dabble in photography and am still waiting for that call from National Geographic.
