Shirley and I (Rich) met while on the staff of Cru (1976-1993). We married in 1989. We served with the high school ministry of Cru as missionaries in the Philippines when we first were introduced to TEAM (we stayed at their guest house in Metro Manila). That was also where we were introduced to Freedom in Christ Ministries (FICM) through a conference held in Makati, Manila by Dr. Neil T. Anderson. It was life-changing for us!
After returning to the States from the Philippines in 1992, I joined FICM in 1993 and served in many different capacities for 27 years. Most recently I served as president of FICM-USA (2006-2019).
While enjoying a sabbatical in late 2019, I “rediscovered” TEAM online and through numerous conversations and times of seeking the Lord, we decided to apply to TEAM this January. We are so grateful to God for being newly appointed missionaries with TEAM, serving under Steve Maybee in the Member Care department.
I will be serving full-time and Shirley part-time (she is also a Title One reading teacher). My passion is to see the Great Commission fulfilled as soon as possible so that our Lord can return. My desire is to encourage and equip TEAM missionaries and their families so that they can serve even more effectively, walking and ministering in their identity, position, authority and freedom in Christ.
Shirley has a wonderful gift of encouragement and will eagerly pray for the missionaries and their families and will enjoy sending notes to them to support and encourage them.
Rich and Shirley have four grown children:
Michelle (age 29), is married to Shane Ferrell. Shane is now stationed in Germany as an Army psychologist. Michelle will join him, Lord willing, later in 2020. Michelle also has her doctorate in psychology and is currently doing post-doc work in pediatric neuropsychology in Augusta, GA.
Brian (age 27) is married to Araca (pronounced like Erika) and they reside in Raleigh, NC. Both are licensed attorneys. Brian is currently clerking for the Associate Chief Justice of the NC Supreme Court, Paul Newby, having recently graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law and passed the bar exam (much to everyone’s relief!)
Emily (age 25) is residing in Chicago, IL and…after serving as an intern with Cru Inner City, Chicago, has begun pursuit of a Masters degree in Social Work (MSW) through Loyola University of Chicago. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nutrition from Appalachian State University.
Joshua “Luke” Saibua Miller (age 25) lives at home with Rich and Shirley. He was adopted from the Rangsit Babies’ Home outside of Bangkok, Thailand in 1999. He has been diagnosed with ADHD, is mentally handicapped (trainable) and is on the autism spectrum. When not sheltered at home, Luke works part-time washing dishes at a local convenience store restaurant. He loves movies and has a fun sense of humor
