I grew up the son of a pastor, in a church with a rich and dynamic history in Christian Missions. From the time I was a young boy, I wanted to be a missionary in Africa. Due to my church’s unique and long-standing connection with the amaZioni of southern Africa, over the years I grew to have a particularly strong interest and passion for these people and this region.
While preparing for missionary work in my studies at Moody Bible Institute in Spokane, WA, I married my childhood sweetheart and best friend, Jessica. Our shared passion for missions and for proclaiming the gospel has been one of the strongest uniting factors in our relationship over the years, and I am privileged to work and serve and live alongside such an incredible woman.
In 2015, Jessica and I were appointed as TEAM missionaries to southern Africa. We are honored and excited to be working with such a great organization with such a rich and long history in the mission field!
As we continue to work, love, serve, and minister, be it in the United States or southern Africa, wherever we are, we relate to the prophet Jeremiah when he wrote: “If I say, ‘I will not mention Him, or speak anymore in His name, there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.’” (Jeremiah 20:9)
Jessica and I are captivated by grace—transformed beyond belief by the gospel of Jesus Christ, and we can’t NOT proclaim all that He has done for us and all that He has done—and will do!—for the world.
I professed faith in Jesus Christ as a young child and was raised by Christian parents who faithfully taught me God’s Word. I also grew up living near my grandparents, who had been missionaries in Africa. I listened eagerly to their stories and even learned a few words in the local language they spoke; by age 12, I was hooked. I decided that I too wanted to serve God in Africa, and I have been pursuing missionary service ever since.
I took my first short-term trip to South Africa in 2009, which was followed by a semester in Swaziland in 2010, and a return to South Africa for an internship in 2012. On every trip I fell more in love with the people and the culture, and had many confirming opportunities to use my gifts and share God’s love in a variety of unique ways. In between these Africa excursions I attended community college and eventually Moody Bible Institute – Spokane, where I got my BA in Intercultural Ministries.
Through these years I had by my side my best friend, Stephen, who would eventually become my husband. We met as small children and grew up sharing an interest in missions, Africa, music, and knowing God. I had the privilege of being on a team with him for one of the South Africa trips, attending Moody together, and finally marrying him in 2013. Since then we have been working, serving, studying, saving, support-raising, and getting ready to head into long-term missionary service in Southern Africa.
Life is an adventure, and God has had His hand in my life every step of the way thus far. I am excited to follow His leading into a future of joyous Kingdom-living, both in this life and the next.
We are going to Southern Africa to minister among youth. Our vision is to raise up the next generation of the church by using our gifts and passion for youth ministry to target this overlooked, yet large, percentage of the population.
TEAM’s description of this ministry is as follows:
Care for and guide teens and young adults in their spiritual formation. There is a huge need and opportunity in South Africa to enhance ministries geared toward youth. The format may include one-on-one mentoring, informal Bible studies, and large groups. Plan and lead outreach events and social activities that appeal to teens and young adults. Use your ability to understand and communicate Biblical truth in a clear and relevant manner so teens and young adults understand and apply lessons. Develop and nurture relationships both inside and outside the church as you share the love of Christ.
We couldn’t have stated it better, and are thankful for the privilege to be part of such a dynamic ministry!
Primary Prayer Request:
We are in the early stages of support-raising. Please pray for us as we tell others about what God is doing in Southern Africa and encourage them to get involved.
We do not yet know exactly where in South Africa we will be for our first term. Please pray for wisdom as we work with our Ministry Area Leaders to determine the best location.
