Praying Through Scripture for Global Workers

by Suzanne Pearson

Man reading the Bible and praying.

This month on the blog, we are focusing on TEAM’s value of “Caring Community.” In the latest Ministry Update, we visited with TEAM’s Director of Member Care, Steve Maybee. Steve shared TEAM’s heart for coming alongside global workers (missionaries) as they navigate the unique pressures of cross-cultural ministry.

For this month’s Prayer Focus, we want to spend time lifting up all laborers in the field as they face tough challenges and tremendous pressures. We can do that than by echoing the prayers we see in God’s Word. We encourage you to join us in interceding on behalf of our brothers and sisters around the world by praying through these Scriptures. Know some global workers by name? Pray for them accordingly! Don’t know any yet? Find some here to pray for!

Romans 5:1-5

Father, we thank you that as believers in Jesus, we have peace with you, and have obtained access by faith into your grace. I pray that _________* will stand in that grace and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. I pray that _________ will rejoice in suffering, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope. I pray that __________ will feel the peace of knowing that your love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

Phil 1:9-11

Lord, I pray for ___________ , that his love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that he may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ. I pray that _________ will be filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through you, Lord. May you receive all the glory and praise for __________’s work.

Eph 3:14-19

Father, today I bow my knees before you, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of your glory, you will allow ___________ to be strengthened with power through your Spirit in his inner being. I pray that you will dwell richly in ___________’s heart through faith. I pray that, rooted and grounded in love, __________ will have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth of your love – the love that surpasses knowledge, that he may be filled with all the fullness of you.

By praying for our brothers and sisters serving in the global Church, we become a part of the “Caring Community” that makes their work possible.

John 17:15-23

Lord, I pray that you will guard ____________ from the evil one. Please help her to remember that she is no longer of the world, just as you are not of the world. I pray that you would sanctify ___________ by your truth; your word is truth. I pray for __________ to have unity with her teammates – that they might be “one” as you are the Godhead three-in-one: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I pray this so that the world may know the truth of the Gospel.

Matt 6:9-13 (Lord’s Prayer)

Father, I pray that your name would be glorified and your Kingdom personified in the work of ___________. I pray that your will is done in __________’s life and ministry. I pray that you will give ___________ everything that he needs today. I pray that he will forgive those who sin against him and that he will seek your forgiveness when needed as well. I pray that you will guard __________ from temptation and deliver him from evil.

Psalm 13

I pray for _______________ when things are difficult in ministry. When she feels forgotten or abandoned, sorrowful or defeated, I pray that you will shine your face on her. I pray that you will consider and answer the cries of ____________’s heart, that she will not be shaken in the face of enemies or trials. I pray that _____________ will trust in your steadfast love and rejoice in your salvation. I pray that she will sing to you because you have dealt bountifully with her.

Ephesians 1:15–19

Lord, I have heard of _____________’s faith in you and his love toward all the saints! I give thanks for him, Lord, and I seek to remember to lift him up continually, not just today. I pray that you will give __________ the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of you, having the eyes of his heart enlightened. I pray that ________ may know the hope to which you have called him – the riches of a glorious inheritance! May he experience the immeasurable greatness of your power toward us who believe.

*These prayers are designed for you to fill in the names of specific missionaries, but you can also adapt them to pray for workers in a certain type of ministry, role, or part of the world.
